Gifts Not Asked For

header4Has it EVER happened to you?  I mean (even perhaps as a child), asking for something you want, but receiving something oh, so much better?

In 1991 I knew I wanted to be a fulltime RVer when I retired, which would not be for another 10 or 15 years.  I knew I didn’t want to be a stay-at-home-in-one-place empty nester, sitting on my porch waiting for grandchildren.  I knew that if I did that, I’d have ants in my pants forever.

I love my children more than life itself, but I’ve never had an urge to “keep them home” once they hit their stride as adults.  So I assumed I’d be traveling alone, and that was just fine with me.

Bess and Indian FriendBut Life is so full of happy surprises!  When it was time to sell everything and begin my nomad life, I still had a daughter at home, and her choice was to travel with me for a while.  We had a glorious two years traveling and working together — an experience I’ll always treasure — before she hit her stride.  I’d never even thought to ask for that.  But the Universe is so generous.

I’ve always wanted to travel through the Southwest, but because of the drastic differences in landscape and climate, I didn’t want to find a seasonal job there (they normally last for about six months).  I also felt intimidated by mountains, because my little 6-cylinder truck would probably not be able to haul my trailer up and down those mountains safely.

Jeanne and SaraLo and behold!  My other daughter tells me she’s buying a motorhome and invites me to travel with her, for six months, throughout the Southwest!  What?!? Universe, you rascal, you!  I never asked for this, but WOW, how you can lift my heart to the heavens with your surprise gifts!

These gifts not asked for are possibly the most treasured, and the greatest evidence that the Universe is so in love with us that it sometimes can’t help itself, and showers us with loving gifts that we didn’t think to ask for.

Love is mind-boggling, you know.

    Oh yes, yes, yes Jeanne!

Totally relate to that. I see it in my life in so many ways, almost on a weekly basis.

These gifts are indeed the most treasured!

I am so happy for you and share in your joy Jeanne!

    • Jeanne says:

Hi there, Evita — thank you for sharing my joy — you are some kind of beautiful person! And the two gifts I referenced are biggies, but you’re absolutely right, we receive them all the time. Just like the angels, seen and unseen that come to our aid, many gifts received aren’t always recognized as such. When I do recognize one, I just about melt with the realization of how loved I am!

The universe is so in love with us that it showers us with gifts – I LOVE that Jeanne! Thank you!

    enjoy it!

    • Jeanne says:

Ha, Ha — ah, Natural, there’s always room for one more (and her cameras) but you gotta love dogs, cuz we’re traveling with three of them!

When you DO get to do that traveling, we’ll have to meet up somewhere, whatcha say?

  4. Hi Jeanne,

What a grand time you must be having traveling with your daughter. It is like a miracle, isn’t it?

As I was looking through you older posts and the photos, I can imagine you gals are having the best of times. And oh, what wonderful memories you are creating.

It doesn’t get any better than that, does it?

    Safe travels to you both.

    • Jeanne says:

Hi, Barbara! Funny you should say “it doesn’t get any better” — every time I think it’s the best it could be, it DOES get better and that boggles my imagination!

This journey so reflects life’s journey — always something new and unexpected, where the scenery can be completely foreign to previous experience, and at the same time immensely magnificent. My eyes are so wide open these days, I think they may fall out of my head, LOL!!

Thanks for visiting, and safe travels to you as well!

Jeanne…a woman after my own heart. The life you are living now has possibilities in the near future for me. I relish the thought ;) and, I love following you.
Powerful, powerful post. Grand, Grand Universe!

  7. Jeanne says:

Oh, Kathy, I’m so excited for you and your near future possibilities! Yes, relish the thought, feed it often, and soon you’ll be there, saying like I did, “what the heck just happened?” Makes me giggle whenever I remember how it all came to be!

I wish you all kinds of tailwinds to speed you along, friend!

  8. My aunt and uncle did that in their early retirement years and it made for great memories for them – and also let everyone in the family see a lot more of them since we’re spread out up and down the east coast…

    • Jeanne says:

Hiya, Paul — I say good for your kinfolk to wander, and you’re right, when a family’s all spread out like that, what a delight to be able to visit like that. And for me, I love being able to visit without having to be a house guest, and sleep in my own bed. It’s the best of both worlds!

Thanks for stopping by, hope to see you again :)

  9. Yes, to what Evita says.

I’m LOVING this rascally rascally Universe too! People like you coming into my life out of the blue — as Barbara says above, doesn’t get any better indeed!

I love how you word things and your excitement for life. You are fun. And fun is good.

    • Jeanne says:

Jannie, I’m absolutely HONORED to be considered “fun” by the Queen of Funstering! I’ve never ever used that word to describe me. Maybe you’re contagious? THAT’S a good thing — your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to infect the world :)
